Boys Will Be Boys?

So it seems that last week during basketball practice, the kindergarten boys were practicing a bit more than their dribbling and shooting. Ha ha, actually, they were practicing their shooting, just not of the ball. Turns out they couldn't wait for the water break so they could hightail it into the bathroom to see who could pee highest on the wall (I'm still unclear as to whether or not it actually happened or if there was just a lot of talk among the boys).

Oh yes. This is what boys do, apparently. As we parents were gathered the following morning, listening to the coach update us on our sons' abilities (he he), there was a collective sigh from us moms. Shaking our heads. "Why? Can anyone tell us why?"

The dads just shrugged their shoulders and mumbled something about "because they're boys."

I am a big believer that boys are genetically programmed different from girls in more ways than one. I know there's quite a few moms that get disgusted when we say things like "oh, it's a boy thing." But I can promise you this: girls just don't do that. Granted we don't have the physical ability to aim our urine wherever, but I'm willing to bet a million bucks (that I don't have) that we wouldn't do it anyway, had we that special ability. Because our brains are still wired to go "Why? Why on earth would I pee on the wall?" We just don't think that way.

Lactating women don't have contests to see who can squirt milk the furthest. Nor do they mark their territory in the snow.

Upon sharing this whole bathroom episode with Kevin, he nodded and did the whole Dad response - "yup, it's a boy thing." And then he chuckles, pumps two fists in the air and tells me that in his neighborhood, it was widely known that he alone could maintain the biggest arc of pee that boys could run under.

I guess I'm proud of him. And I guess I hope our sons follow in his footsteps. And I really hope the neighborhood parents are understanding when their sons come home with pee-dampened hair because someone was practicing the arc and didn't quite hold it long enough.

  1. Yes, as a pre-k teacher...it's a boy thing. I am probably one of the few people who have a girl who was excited that she could "pee" on the wall like her cousin (a boy). She just leans back and wa-la. Back to the boys, does Kevin flush the toilet before he is finished to see if he can finish peeing before the toilet fully flushes? I just don't get boys!

  2. So yeah... I know women don't have contests to see how far their milk will flow... But I can guarantee you that they could make money doing so.
