The Grandparents & Andy

The grandparents recently took Andy with them to Florida and boy, was everyone filled with excitement as they laid out some plans. What were the plans, you ask?

And I quote. "Whatever Andy wants to do." End quote.

I got daily emails from Grandma during their 6-day excursion. Kevin's and my laughter just kept growing with each email or phone call. Here are some excerpts:

Day 1: "Let the spoiling begin...total chicken nuggets = 19...total brownies = who's counting (he he)" Translation: "You are not here to stop us and this is so much fun."

Day 2: "Here is a photo of Andy holding a popcicle. He refused to eat anything Disney had to offer...we rode the Jungle Cruise - big hit...he kept asking 'that's a robot, right?'" Translation: "We are still having a blast without you stickler parents to interfere with our spoiling."

Day 3: "A full day here...DeLeon Springs Park...50-minute boat ride...watched a canoe tipped over and nearly sank...saw three alligators...swimming hole and playground...Kennedy Space Center...crawl through space ships...robot center...fireworks." Translation: "Where's our bed?"

Day 4: "We did Sea World today. We wandered around in the hot sun looking at one smelly fish thing after another. As Joe and I were leaving, we vowed never to return - no matter how many future grandsons beg us to go." Translation: "It's too hot, fish are fish are fish are fish, and the novelty of this trip is wearing off."

Day 5: "We decided to go swimming...the kid is like a fish, or Cody from Surf's Up...he got a Spiderman surfboard at Walmart in order to give us a true reenactment...I'm now a nice beet-red color...because Andy wanted to stay in the pool for a good 4 hours, taking a chicken nugget and brownie break before heading back....the really good news is that I promised Andy we'd go back to DeLeon Springs for more swimming tomorrow...that way I can get a good 2nd degree burn...now we're really excited." Translation: "The kid is wearing us out big time - he's like the Energizer Bunny, just keeps on going and going and going and going."

Day 6: "I awoke this morning with swimmer's ear...as well as sunburn pain...I have 3 raw spots on the bottom of my feet from walking on the concrete around the pool...also, Joe and I have bruises on our stomachs...we believe they were caused by Andy pushing off from us in the pool." Translation: "Time to go home."

All in all, they had an absolutely great time with Andy. And he still chatters about it. But let's state the obvious here: the grandparents are suddenly much more appreciative of the fact that Kevin and I actually raise our kids by ourselves and haven't run off to Mexico, leaving not just one but all three in their care for the rest of their childhood. I can name at least half a dozen grandparents raising grandkids full time because the parents are irresponsible and ignorant.

Something else comes to mind too...something my grandma says about how 3 days is the limit for fish and guests?!?!?!?!?
