R - Across the Universe

Rachel is currently obsessed with Beatles music, thanks to the movie "Across the Universe." Her iPod can hold well over 800 songs and she has downloaded every Beatles song she can find. There is something amusing about hearing the teenagers in the back of the van singing "Hey Jude." I'm sure my mom thought the same thing.

This opened up the opportunity to share with Rachel one of my tragic childhood stories. It DOES NOT involve walking to school uphill both ways in the snow. Sadly, my parents never forced me to build that particular character trait.

I remember getting the blue compilation album of Beatles music, with "Lucy in the Sky" and that batch. And it was an album, meant for my little stereo. I could not even begin to place an age on this, but I remember being excited and pulling out the vinyl to listen to a new favorite song, "Strawberry Fields Forever." As soon as the song was over, I lifted the needle to start it over and wouldn't you know it? I scratched the song. THE SONG. On the first day I got it. After the first time I played it. I'm sure tears came to my eyes. I do remember that this was one of those moments when I realized there was nothing I could do about it at all and crying wouldn't change anything. Because in 1980-something, you couldn't just log on to the internet and download the song again. Gosh, that was a sad day.

Rachel's response to my woeful tale? "That would suck." I think it was said with sincerity. And yes, she does know what vinyls are.
